It’s been more than 20 years, but “Desperate Housewives” star Dana Delany still won’t spill about her date with Sen. John Kerry – a night so strange it could have happened on Wisteria Lane!
“Oh, it’s ancient history,” Dana demurred yesterday when we again tried to get her to give it up. “And it wasn’t really a bad date – it was just a good story.”
The Phillips Andover alum met Kerry, then a bachelor, at a veterans event in D.C. when she was starring in the Vietnam-themed TV drama “China Beach.”
he senator invited her to dinner then back to his apartment to see his “war films.” (Why, oh why, did Kerry bring a video camera to war, Dana wondered . . .) Apres screening, the senator attempted to, shall we say, storm “China Beach.”“We’re all friends,” Delany laughed. “I know his daughter, Alex . I supported him in 2004. People have such mouths!”
Dana was in rainy Providence earlier this week finishing up work on a new pilot for ABC tentatively titled “Body of Evidence.” In it, she plays a brain surgeon who has to stop working after a car accident leaves her with shaky hands.
“She becomes a medical examiner,” Delany divulged. “Because, as I say in the show, ‘I can’t kill someone who’s already dead.’ ”
If the pilot is picked up for a fall series, then it seems we’ve seen the last of Katherine Mayfair on “Desperate Housewives.” Dana said she loved playing the newest Desperado on the block – a character that morphed from a Martha Stewart-wannabe, to a deranged stalker, and finally to a lesbian!
“One great thing about my character was, because Katherine was not one of the original four housewives, they threw all the really outrageous stuff at her,” she said. “It’s really kind of a dream job.”
When we last saw Katherine, she and her galpal Robin Gallagher, played by “Dexter” dearly departed Julie Benz, were headed off into the sunset to explore their Sapphic passion away from the neighbors’ prying eyes.
Delany said Katherine will return to “DH” (most likely sans Julie, who is also getting a shot at a pilot) only if “Body of Evidence” isn’t picked up.
But Dana will make what could be her farewell appearance on Wisteria Lane next week. The actress/activist is hosting a neighborhood rally in fictional Fairview to raise awareness for the Child Hunger Ends Here Neighborhood Rally campaign.
“One in four kids in America doesn’t know where their next meal is coming from,” Delany said. “That is shocking to me.”
The campaign is a partnership between Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger-relief organization, and ConAgra, makers of a host of grocery store staples such as Peter Pan peanut butter and Hunt’s canned goods. It seeks volunteers nationwide who will hold neighborhood events – bake sales, carnivals, food drives, etc. – and donate the proceeds to Feeding America.
“ConAgra has already pledged to donate $10 million over five years,” Delany said. “And for each of certain products sold, seven meals will be provided. So it’s a good deal for everyone.”
About the Kerry thing I have to say something: what the hell is up trying to get details about her private life? She’ll share them when and if she wants, so trying to make her spill the beans isn’t going to work. I’ve known about that story for years, so why trying to bring back something that was burried is beyond me. The things people do for gossip sometimes go too far. And yes I am aware I sound like if I was one of her lawyers but I just think everyone’s privacity should be respected or as long as the person wants, and if in this case, Dana decides to keep it all private? Good for her because considering the society we live in, the more you share the easier you become a target for the media and gossip.
